- Let the grocery store help plan your menu- use the grocery store flyer to plan your meals. Meats are one of the most expensive items in a meal, so keep an eye on what meats are on sale and plan your weekly menu around those meats. If they have chicken and hamburger on sale this week, then use recipes that call for chicken or hamburger. Don't buy the pork if it isn't on sale...save those pork recipes for later...
- Be prepared - Make sure you have ALL the ingredients in your recipes before going to the grocery store. This not only saves you time, but money. Most people cannot buy only one item when they go into a store...so if you need onions for a recipe and you don't have any, then you have to go back to the store...you'll get your onions, but you might also end up with those cookies that are on sale or soup or anything else that catches your eye when you are doing this second shopping trip. If you had been prepared, then you would have gotten what you needed...the first time...so make a grocery list and check it twice before leaving the house.
- Never go grocery shopping when you are hungry - You will be more likely to buy things you don't need when you shop hungry. Shopping hungry causes you to look for things like snacks, or fast food type of items...such as pizzas, etc...now I'm not saying frozen pizza's are bad, but if they aren't on sale, then DON'T buy them...and if you are hungry, then you will be more likely to pay more for them than you should.
